There is a place in my head where my characters go when I am not paying attention to them. Sometimes it's an open field, a large Victorian house, or a pet store for some reason. Today they are in a bar with  worn black leather cushioned stools, at least a dozen wooden tables and pictures of comical animals on the badly painted brown walls.
